GF Smith visit to James Cropper, Cumbria

It’s not uncommon for several of us here in the office to get a little overexcited when we talk paper, so it was Christmas come early when GF Smith invited Michael to go and visit the place where the magic happens.

James Cropper Speciality Paper is the UK’s only truly bespoke specialty paper manufacturer and are the company that produce the Colorplan range for GF Smith. Based at Burneside Mills, Kendal, six generations of the family have built the company to where it is today – a global business driving innovation and discovery.

“The day was fascinating, educational and inspiring” said Michael.

“We started with the basics in the lab, learning how colours were mixed and matched, what effect the different raw materials would have on the end product and saw for ourselves, on a small scale, the principles of making a sheet of paper.”

The place was stooped in history and family ties, people were born in the village, went to school in the village, worked in the mill side by side and, inevitably, would be buried in the village. A truly great sense of pride and passion was very quickly communicated by all who work there.

As we moved in to the main mill to see the production on the grand scale we all really began to appreciate that this couple of hours would be so valuable when we returned to the office. Thinking of our next project, if there is a potential place for paper to play in it, the visit should help us communicate a little better with clients and printers to create some great printed (or not) pieces.

My personal favourites – ‘Sorbet Yellow’ and ‘Pistachio’.

A big big thanks must go out to Matthew Scharf, GF Smith and all at James Cropper for their amazing hospitality and chitter chatter. The company was entertaining, the scenery was stunning.”

In the field with Anton Stark

Michael and Anton were at Fountains Abbey yesterday, for a 6am start, to to begin the first of a two day photoshoot with 10′s new client DTMS.

The rebrand of the Pateley Bridge based company required us to get some fab new shots for the upcoming new brochure and website. The weather managed to hold off long enough to get the key shots we needed of the DTMS team at work in their environment.

10 take a trip to the Dairy Event 2011, NEC

Two intrepid 10 travelers decided to take a trip to the NEC yesterday to check out The Dairy Event and Livestock Show 2011.

We’ve been supporting, and evolving, the KW brand for a number of years now and this is the second time that this event has been staged at the NEC. This year’s stand, which is 10x15m, has evolved from last year to incorporate the new ‘Because’ campaign that we have recently created for KW.

The structure comprises of a 4m high central tower, coffee bar, internet cafe, feed sample tables and a scale model of the new Vivergo Fuels plant which is based in Hull.

It was a really great to walk about the stand and to see the KW engaging with people throughout the day.

It was said that the competition had upped their game from last year, it’ll be interesting to see how people approach next year’s show.

DMP photo shoot

We had a great time this week, in Baildon, on the photoshoot for the new DMP branding that we’ve been working on for the past few months.

The day played host to five kids, one brave photographer and a whole load of dressing up gear which, with the kids imagination, produced a series of great shots which will be used to support the new DMP brand and positioning.

We’ll let you see the final shots, along with the brand work, once we’ve put it all together.

We’ve a new face here this week at 10, and we’ve bullied her into supplying us with the classic 10 year old photo.

Ellie joins us from Calder High on a 1 weeks work placement after establishing an interest in Graphic Design through her GCSE design studies. We are hoping to enlighten her on all things brand and help her to create her very own brand to take away with her at the end of the week.

James joins the 10 team

James Bornshin at 10 Associates

We are delighted to announce that we have expanded our 10 family with James Bornshin – a young high-flyer with a first-class honours degree in Communication Design from Huddersfield University.

James captured the imagination of Jill and Michael, with his eye-catching portfolio of degree work and freelance projects. Now he’s an integral part of an agency he’s always admired for its honest approach, great reputation and original aesthetic styles.

James’ speciality is design for print, and he’s got a definite ‘thing’ about paper and print finishes. Not surprisingly for a relatively recent graduate, James loves the fact that the work he now produces at 10 is real-world work: “It’s the adverts, brochures and business cards that we see around us every day, and the concepts and visuals that are helping to give genuine personality and tangible advantages to real brands.”

Away from the studio James is football mad and obsessed with music, and his current claim to fame is shaking hands with Patrick Stewart at his graduation ceremony!
